Do you, as a custodian, find it difficult to get all your work done because of a lack of staffing? If so, you are not alone. Many buildings are understaffed, especially state and federal buildings due to budget constraints. Schools typically struggle to staff their buildings adequately and in the long run the buildings begin to suffer in maintenance, cleaning and safety.
I don't know if this situation will change anytime soon due to the nature of the problem. The basics of cleaning and maintenance get done, but it is not up to the standards we'd like to see as I'm sure you will agree. Unless more financing is budgeted for maintenance and cleaning of buildings, it won't.
We take pride in our work and often receive many favorable comments on how nice things look despite the paucity of funds and staffing. Still, having staffing and funding that would allow upkeep to be as it should would not only make our work easier, it would also promote building longevity and safety. Time will tell as to whether or not these circumstances will ever change.
Here's an article that highlights this.
Educating custodians, school staff, students, parents and the public on the duties, responsibilities and needs of a school facility. Working to make the custodial department more understandable and hoping to engage the support and help of all who use the campus. Sharing information on several cleaning-related, health and custodial topics to enlighten readers and requesting input from all who peruse this blog.
