Special Education Day - December 2

Every December 2 is designated as Special Education Day.  This is a great opportunity to think about what this means for people and students with special needs.  They are people with unique abilities, skills and personalities.  Many times over the years, I've been impressed and amazed at what people with special needs can accomplish.

Here in our school, I've worked with many special needs students in the lunchroom and elsewhere over the years.  They are always happy and excited to be used and to participate in activities that make them feel useful and a contributor to society.

Teachers and paras that work with these students also deserve praise for the hard work they do in helping mold these students to become adults and active members of society.  The job can be tiresome and sometimes overwhelming, but the results are amazing and heartwarming.

So, think about those students and adults with special needs not only on December 2 this year, but every day. Say "hi" to them and let them know they are special.  That goes a long way toward making them feel needed and useful.  They are awesome!
