Chemical Analysis

Schools and homes filled with children. Custodial rooms and home storage areas filled with chemicals. The two don’t go together!
Every day we use chemicals to help us clean our buildings and homes. Whether it be simple deodorizers or potent cleansers, we are constantly in contact with or are using some chemical.
Extreme caution needs to be used so that kids and chemicals don’t meet. Knowing the curious nature of children, whether young or old, should be a warning sign to us that we need to keep our cleaning supplies out of the reach of those mischievous hands.
Children have been permanently injured or killed by ingesting, touching or smelling chemicals which were left in the open where they had easy access to them. Even just setting a bottle down for a second could be devastating. Always keep chemicals out of the reach of children. Put them away or lock them up if you have to leave the area you are working in for a few minutes. Make sure ALL bottles are labeled appropriately. Never leave chemicals in the open where children can get to them.
Even over breaks and summer caution needs to be used since many of the school buildings are still being used for various functions. Children may be wandering through the building, passing by where we are working or curiously trying to see what we are doing. Be sure not to leave any chemicals within easy reach. The same applies at home. Whether we are doing weekly cleaning or are working on a bigger project such as spring cleaning, use extreme caution so that little hands do not grab big trouble!
Always make sure your MSDS books at work are up-to-date and near your cleaning supplies. Know how to read the sheets. Make sure everyone on your crew knows too. Keep the national phone number for poison control handy. (1-800-222-1222) Use common sense. The same principles apply at home. Know your products and understand the labels and warnings.
Protecting children from chemical poisoning is just as important as teaching them, protecting them from predators and keeping them safe. If we take the time to care, we can feel satisfied in knowing that we have done our part to prevent mixing children and chemicals!
