What happens during cold, icy, snowy weather? What do the custodians do?
Our job is to make sure that the sidewalks and entries are cleared of snow and ice. We also do the same with the ramps to the portables. Using de-icer, we attempt to create a safe walking environment for the students and staff. Shoveling and plowing snow are also implemented when necessary.
The heat in classrooms is monitored and the boiler and HVAC systems checked for proper functioning to keep the buildings warm. Lighting inside and out is checked to provide adequate lighting and safety for all.
If schools start late, other custodians other than the head or lead custodian may be called in early to help shovel and de-ice. This is at the discretion of the maintenance department.
Constant communication with administration and maintenance are in effect to ensure everything is ready for students and staff.
Overall, during icy, snowy, cold weather, the custodians are much busier than normal. We do everything in our power to have the school ready to open. Usually, there's only one custodian on board in the morning, so please be patient while he/she does their best to cover the entire campus to create a safe environment.
Educating custodians, school staff, students, parents and the public on the duties, responsibilities and needs of a school facility. Working to make the custodial department more understandable and hoping to engage the support and help of all who use the campus. Sharing information on several cleaning-related, health and custodial topics to enlighten readers and requesting input from all who peruse this blog.
