Annual Visits Save Lives

Our last poll asked how often the Fire Marshal inspected the school.  The answer is annually.

Once a year the Fire Marshal comes by and walks through the whole building checking to make sure fire codes are being adhered to. The visit can take anywhere from 3 - 6 hours depending on the Fire Marshal and what he wants to see. He inspects such things as how close stored items on top of cabinets and shelves are to the sprinkler heads (minimum 18" required), he checks fire doors for opening and shutting, flammable items stored in containers, rooms and storage areas, electrical rooms, boiler rooms, hazardous materials in science labs, shops and other departments and more.

Once he gives us a written report of those items that are not in accord with the code, we have 30 days to fix these issues.  I fix as many as possible and then turn in work orders to maintenance or outside vendors to do the other work as required.

Although the visit of the Fire Marshal can be a bit strenuous, his job is important as he endeavors to do all he can to save lives in the event of a disaster or fire.  We all need to thank the fire department for their excellent support and concern!
