Hidden In the Open

In past blogs I've mentioned how often custodians and janitors are placed at the bottom of the totem pole or are recognized but not acknowledged by others. Their profession is viewed as of secondary importance and is rarely the type of job most people would seek out when looking for work.

As realistic and controversial as those views may be, I find it very interesting that in many movies and TV shows this very profession is so often part of the script. More often than not, somewhere during the course of that video entertainment a custodian or janitor will be hidden in the open. Look beyond the main storyline and characters. Somewhere along the way you'll see cleaning of some type being carried out by a custodian or janitor during the program. They may not be in the forefront, but they are there. Doesn't that show that the producers and other program staff recognize the reality and necessity of this profession being present to make these fictional programs realistic?

And when these people do have a prominent or brief part in the storyline, how often are they the very ones who add wisdom to the dialogue, are looked to for support or advice or are even revered as "in the know?"

Hidden in the open, but real, true and necessary in fiction and life!
