Trilobal

Our recent poll asked about a common shape of carpet fiber.  The answer is "trilobal."  (View trilobal and other carpet fiber shapes here.) A trilobal carpet fiber disperses light well and is used on many carpet fibers.  It has been used for years and has proven very effective in carpet construction.  The fibers are so small it is difficult to actually see this fiber shape.  The actual strand you see is made up of several tiny trilobal fibers.  You'd have to see these shapes using a microscope or powerful magnifying glass.

This tyype of fiber was designed to reflect light in such a way that it hides soiling very well. That is why after some years a carpet begins to get a dirty or dingy look to it as dust and dirt have scratched this fiber now reducing its ability to hide soiling and creating a shadowy or darker look in this area especially heavy traffic areas. This explains the reason a carpet still looks brand new when you move furniture and view the area that was under the furniture as no wear has occured in this area. This is taught by the carpet mfg. in certification schools for carpet and upholstery cleaning and is helpful to know.
